SFX mag here in the UK is running a sci-fi short story competition:

http://tinyurl.com/7rdcx

The prizes aren't great but the important thing is that your work would get a good airing (they are releasing a book and the winner and 10 runners-up get to be published in it).

Ends 1st April (no its not a joke ) so you'll need to get cracking.

I'm sure if anyone needs any constructive criticism then we'd be up for helping out.

if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Sounds nifty, except for the fact that it is only open to UK residents...

quote:
4. The competition is open to all UK residents of 18 or over, except employees of Future plc, Future Publishing Limited and any of their wholly owned subsidiaries, any marketing services agency or handling house used by them and any other company involved with the administration of this competition, or any member of their households.

And they define "story" as 1,000 - 2,000 words? That's a vignette, maybe, but I don't see how you could possibly develop any real plot--even a typical single-thread short story plot--in under 2k. I've done NaNoWriMo for the past two years, and for that I write 2k words a day, so I have a very good idea of what you can fit into that amount of words.

But I guess that's all moot, me not being a UK resident and all.

No I'm too busy frying other fish (actually that might need another thread ) but I am passing it around and encouraging people to give it a shot.
