Hi, Im back... I bet some of you really missed me.

I was surprised to find that there's no thread about this so far (or I missed it) as you talk about all kinds of crap, and this thing is turning into an international crisis.

Initially, I hadn't been able to find these and decided I'd make one of you look for them, but while I was typing this, my cousin found a site that has all of them... So instead, I'll post them up in case some of you are interested.

Keep in mind that this will take forever to load as the traffic is overwhelming... well, without further ado, I present you with the Danish Cartoons that made arabs go nuts

Okay, this one's faster

This is so wrong on so many levels I don't really know where to start...

- Religious followers claim that islamic law is valid for everyone everywhere...
- Groups are threatening and demanding apologies from SWEDEN...
- Danish prime minister is actually apologizing for this...
- People are blowing up churches over this...

and more...

sigh...

Seems to me to be another case of..... "get a fucking life "

If your beliefs are so fragile that your whole world can be uspet over a newspaper printing some drawings.....it's time to reevaluate your religious views.

"Much ado about nothing" - quite frankly, all the ruckus is just making the image of Islam more negative, not better, IMHO.

I basically agree with ya, DL & WS
However...
An interesting thing with this is the fact that these cartoons were published 6 months ago and the frenzy starts now. To me this indicates that this is used as yet another tool to target the west.

And "Much ado"...
Well when armed so called "freedom fighters" place the EU office under siege and 6 christian churches are bombed it goes way beyond "Much ado" to me. That is insane, pure and simple and we cannot allow it.

The combination of religious followers that claim that islamic law is valid for nonmuslims in nonmuslim countries and that heads of states in those countries actually apologises and that newspapers fire their editors over the publication is horrendous to me!

This is way bigger that "get a fucking life", it hits on values that most of us find very valuable, freedom of speach for instance...

Yes, but Freedom of Speech is rapidly taking a backseat in the Mr. Bush era - see Google, M$, Yahoo trends in relation to China, the Patriot Act, Wiretapping in the USA, and the different changes to ID cards of various European lands in recent times.

This is just a continuation of what I call the "Ostrich Syndrome" - stick your head in the sand and maybe it will go away has changed to "take all your rights away, and maybe the bad things will go away, too" - *bleh*

Absolutely.
I have slowly been hearing more and more about this, and the more I hear the more absurd it gets. I was not aware initially of bombings and firings, and that is truly outrageous...

While I understand and agree with your sentiments, the "get a life" , while crude and simple, still applies at the root of all this.

It really is that simple when you boil it down.

From what I am reading and seeing, it does look like the Christian vs Moslem thing is heating up.

Moderates are being forced to take sides, or stand on the sidelines as helpless bystanders.

These may be the seeds of the next large scale conflict, if it isn't a large scale conflict already.

So very very true

As for next large scale conflict, it sure does feel like that, whomever helped this along (considering the 6 months it took for it to take off, plus the fact that it's just after an election) sure knows what buttons to push to start up the militant fractions in the middle. east. After all, what starts wars as easily as good ole religion?

Oh, btw.
To be fair, a muslim paper actually published the cartoons and asked the question
"What's worse for islam, these cartoons or videos of kidnappers slicing the throats of victims in the name of islam?"

Surprisingly (not) he was fired and the newspaper shut down, but that guy deserves a lot of praise for defending reason...

Lots of hypocrisy here as well. Muslims claim depicting old Mo is a naughty blasphemous thing to do...well

Now I'm really wondering where this is going to end...
The swedish/danish plus the norwegian embassys in Syria has been attacked and burned by demonstrators...

As far as I know that is technically an act of war, at least if the government is in some way involved in the act, and as far as I know there are no such things as non government approved demonstrations in syria.

Out of curiosity, what do you think would be an appropriate response from the nordic countries at this point?

This matter is much more complicated than it may seem for a number of reasons:

1) Most of the protesting muslims have not actually seen any of the cartoons because their media is very limited ... tv-s are basically a rarity and their own newspapers don't print those cartoons.
<- so their impressions are influenced by their local newspapers' interpretations of the whole matter ... of course then there's the thing that most don't read newspapers themselves and word goes around and the story changes
2) Danish prime minister said months ago that they will not appologize no matter what.
3) Muslims' rules dictate that a prophet's image should not be printed or drawn/painted.
4) Mohammed is like their big idol figure. Which means any insults towards him will be taken very personally by every muslim.
5) They are very religious.
6) There are 1 billion muslims and 'only' (40k?)=0.004% terrorists if we sum them all up. Which means that the regular muslims are normal ~peaceful~ people.
7) They have a totally different temperament, rules, laws, way of living, ideology (read different brainwashing) etc.

Now because Mohammed is their big idol guy and those cartoons were making hints about the relations between Mohammed and terrorism muslims feel insulted.
I have a theory that someone (probably from that 0.004%) is secretly pulling the strings behind those scenes there because these cartoons have been out there for months and I don't know the full story but to me it seems that this wave of violence erupted rather suddenly. At least makes me think that what we have been told is not all there is to it.

There is definately something fishy about the timing of all this, what with the media blitz of late, especially the last couple weeks, focusing on what to do about Iran. It seems a perfect sideshow for boltering anti-Muslim attitudes among the populations of western nations and garnering support for the upcoming escalation of war cries and fearmongering.

Remember also that it takes only a few strategically placed protestors in key locations with violent intentions to make the entirety look bad. My suspicions say there is someone pulling the strings. Which "side" the puppeteers are on remains to be seen, but is certainly beneficial to long term western military goals as laid out by Thomas Barnett and others. Just some idle thoughts.

Intereting you mention it:

Something rotten in the state of Denmark:
http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=8512

Equally the imams touting the cartoons around the Middle East somehow managed to slip 3 more cartoons in with the Danish ones (which were pretty crap and not as offensive as the 3 slipped in) - one of them seems to be this one:
http://www.masada2000.org/tatiana.html

So it appears fundies on both sides have been manipulating this to their own ends wil the majority of us (including the majority of Moslems) sit around offended by the actions of them both.

I refer you all back to the Power of Nightmares documentary and if you don't want go searching you can watch the three parts here:

Funny indeed...
Yesterday the swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs hand in hand with the swedish secret police SÄPO (locally known as "The monkey mountain") paid a visit to a hosting service that hosts the site of a small political party "sverigedemokraterna.se" which is a quite racist party (although well within the law).

This paper has held a web competition that last days:
"Draw you own picture of the prophet and we'll publish the best".
Definately very untasteful and clearly with the intention to stir the pot, however, still within the law.

After a "discussion" the site was shut down...
Now I don't agree with the reasons this party has for their "competition" at all, BUT in our country we have a law that prohibits the government to impose censure in all medias.
If it's against the law, police will shut it down, but the government is by law forbidden to censore media in this country!

Even if they state that "we only informed the webhost that these types of images can worsen the situation between sweden and islamic countries" and that the webhost took the decision by themselves to close the site it's pure bullshit!

Who wouldn't take that decision "by their own free will" when the Ministry for Foreign Affairs together with the Secret Police knocks on the door...

Here is a link to what the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has to say on the issue: http://www.sweden.gov.se/sb/d/2059

All this country does is tell the fundamentalists that "Ok, we bend over backwards to your whishes, we will shut down media and political parties if they offend you, even if what they do is legal in our country. We wouldn't want you to get angry at us..."
The exact same cowardly chickenshit behaviour as in WWII when the germans was allowed to transport soldiers, material, iron and POW's by rail straight through the "neutral" sweden. And the same ideology runs sweden today as back then.. .

Let's just post a big f*cking sign, "BOHICA" over sweden, that's what we do anyways...
Pathetic!

I'm seriously ashamed of my countrys government at this point!
The only good thing over here in this mess is that everyone I talk to, every paper I read feels exactly the same way as I do.

Gah...
