NoJive said: When Stallone won for Rocky that's about when Oscar lost his lustre for me. Oscar became even duller when Mel Gibson won something. I mean here we have two guys who a few decades earlier Ed Wood wouldn't have even considered for his "B" movies... and here they are winning Oscars!?... Sumpin ain't right. They don't even fit the bill as "Matinee Idols"...at least most of them could sing at least a few notes.
NoJive, I meant no disrespect, I just found it puzziling, that "When Stallone won for Rocky that's about when Oscar lost his lustre for me". I mean Stallone did not win for best actor. While he did write Rocky, the Movie won on it's merits, which had nothing to do with Stallone's acting. So Oscar shined on that day. Now for me that was Stallone's best acting. Nothing he has done since then compares to that. An while he might not have won the award for best acting, the studio did take a big chance with him, and it paid off big time. The movie inspired myself and much of the nation. Not to mention that " With Stallone's nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, he joined only two others with the same pair of honors in the same year in Academy history: Charlie Chaplin (for The Great Dictator (1940)), and Orson Welles (for Citizen Kane (1941). " http://www.filmsite.org/rock.html As for Mel, well he didn't win for actor either, and Braveheart, for me was an amazing movie. Quite graphic, as was Rocky, and just as inspiring. And for me Ed wood would have creamed his shorts, had he either actor working for him. As for fitting the bill of "matinee Idols", I guess I'm not sure what you meant there, and "could sing at least a few notes" lost me entirely. Have the Oscars's changed? Yup. Were all awards justified? Probably not. But they still are THEE needle for acceptance of greatness.
