To be commended for your hard earned work is a great achievement and when your piers recognized it I can see where it would be honored...I guess its the public, fans who make them Gods and there is such fasination with these persons that are not really any great role models.
I think you put it in better context there than in your first post. It's not the celebrities' fault that people obsess over them and look up to them as role models. They're just doing a job that shines them up in front of the world and with that kind of exposure there is always going to be a big number of fans. I watched the Oscars because I have a fascination with movies. I want to work in the industry, and it's become a part of my life. That said, I have a motivation to watch the Oscars because that's the epitome of the industry. So what if some of the movies are made just win awards? So what if better movies made that year weren't nominated? To me, I sometimes try to think of why a certain movie won a certain award. Because the MPAA (Motion Picture Academy of America) chooses who wins and who loses, what was best and what was only interesting enough to be nominated. The MPAA owns Hollywood and funds the making of movies. And I think none of the movies nominated for Best Picture were made for 15 year olds. Crash? Capote? Memoirs of a Geisha? Hustle and Flow? None of which have subject matter that would directly appeal to a 15 year old. Granted that some 15 year olds will go watch these movies, I did when I was 15, I can't see many 15 year olds even knowing that most of these movies exist. As far as what I saw, every film nominated for best Picture had artistic merit. Crash was amazing, one of the better movies I've seen in years. I thought it deserved Best Picture, and so did the Academy. And it's certainly a big step up from Date Movie or Final Destination 3. As for the celebrities and their hypocrisy, their designer-wear that's given to them, and their diamonds. Not all of them blew a million dollars on their outfits. As the issue was addressed, most Animators and Special Effects nominees weren't even talked to during the red carpet interviews, and what a coincidence, they actually deserve recognition. So what if three-6 mafia won an oscar for best original song. Do you think it was mediocre or hypocritical for Eminem winning an oscar? I could see you saying that again if the composer for Brokeback Mountain won instead of three-6. I see a different style of music that is now becoming appreciated in the industry, instead of the constant orchestra composers. I see the MPAA broadening their taste for tunes. After all, context is part of the criteria. "It's hard out here for a pimp," fits the theme of the movie quite well. I didn't particularly like the movie Hustle and Flow, but I see the talent that it took to perform and record the music for it. If you don't watch the Oscars or the movies that win awards for that matter, how can you say that it's all a bunch of bullshit?
