Topic awaiting preservation: Intel Inside

So easy come easy go, today I got my bonus and on Apr 7th I get my Mac Book Pro.

I can't believe I'm getting a Mac I've been homebrewing my PC's for about 10 years but I finally had to take the plunge. I just can't believe I have to wait 3 weeks!

I kept telling myself that first generation hardware might be a mistake but at the end of the day I just couldn't wait.

I'd love to get a Mac. The $$ tho' ain't there but I'm curious about the 'intel inside' stuff.... what's the big deal? I thought mac's were doing just fine as is.

Isn't it true they are nearly impossible to upgrade unless you take them in?

Yeah Macs are nearly impossible to upgrade chip wise. But the trade off is how long that chip holds up. I've gone through 4 operating systems with my G3, I can't recommend that with an average Windows box. I hope it's the same with MacIntel.

Right now I've been salvating over the new MacBookPro, but I really want a 17" version like the PowerBook.

I just can't stress enough - DO NOT BUY INTO THE HYPE.

You're going to be sorely disappointed if you buy a Mac Book under the impression that problems that you have with Windows will no longer exist. They make a fine computer but there exists an idea that they make a vastly superior computer - it just isn't true.

I dunno Jestah, I have to say, from my own experience, that I have 99.9% fewer problems with a Mac than I do with Windows. I used to feel that Mac was just that, HYPE. But I've since changed my tune. I have far less stress with Mac than I did with Windows. And if I could get everyone I know to switch to Mac, I'd be a very happy man.

If I could give bit any advice it would be to consider why he's purchasing a Mac Book. I think if he's looking to avoid BSOD, he'll be sorely disappointed when he discovers Force Quits.

Nope not worried about the BSOD. Honestly I've had very few OS issues since Windows 2K. I picked it for a couple of reasons.

1. It's cooler, no doubt the best looking and one of the best form factors in the biz. Apple does all the little things right, like the magnet icpower plug etc.
2. It's comparably priced to most new notebooks on the market.
3. It's like Unix but with Office!. Honestly I've been intrigued about Mac's for this reason since OSX was released but I wasn't in the market for a laptop and the price difference between my homebuilt machines and a Mac was significant.


But specifically in regards to your issue, first you're one of the few I've ever heard that sounds like they've had a bad experience with a Mac. The truth is that Mac's should be more stable, it's OS is as robust and developed as any out there and they take a huge X factor out of the equation by limiting the hardware. No need for a bloated hardware API like DirectX that takes away almost half of the potential issues.

In fact, compared to other comparable notebooks (with regards to cpu, memory, harddrive, graphics chipset, screen, software and overall size and weight) I've not found any system that is considerably cheaper. If you find a system you think is comparable and check the components list, at least one of these - most often the graphics chipset - is commonly far lower quality than that offered in the MacBook Pro. In fact, the MacBook Pro seems to fare pretty well even against wieldy desktop replacement systems. So really, Macs aren't even especially expensive any more...

I picked up a G4 12" PowerBook 2-3 years back with OSX Panther, and I basically has'nt used my P4 with 19" screen since asides from making it a dual boot to learn more linux.

I turn it off perhaps once a month, I've had 3 hanging experieces in all that time, basically it's rock solid! Plus, there are tons of small helpful freeware thingies that really help your day, for example QuickSilver which is brilliant! Think Open Source...
Recently I tossed another GB Ram into it and all of a sudden it was a brand new machine

At work I've been running a std laptop PC but after a recent breakin at the office where we lost all laptops that was in the office (locked with wires) I and 4 more has ordered MacBooks for work as well. For those windows proggies we absolutely need we will probably set up a remote PC or in worst case use virtual PC.

To me it's first about a rock solid OS with a really usable interface on top, very good battery life (3,5 - 4 hours), no more plug§ 'n pray, everything just works... Then it's packed in a superbly designed package.

However, where I a serious gamer it wouldn't cut it, not for the games I like. Hopefully that will change with intel inside.
