remember from some time back that a few people here were using 1&1.

been looking at their site at what seems to me to be a pretty good deal

and was wondering if you's could tell me what kind of service you've been getting

uptime, support, etc. . . any advice is appreciated

here's a link to the package i'm looking at:

I've hosted with 1&1 Germany in the past, and they're fully automated... meaning besides you being able to adminstrate whatever settings you need yourself (and not getting any specials... it's either in the interface or it isn't), they will detect when a server's down.

Shortly, I've had good experiences, and even if their support staff could sometimes go the extra mile, they usually get the problem fixed.

before you decide on a host check out BlueHost.com... i'm using them for 4 websites now and they are the best host i've ever used (i don't work for them...lol) they have 24/7 support that is right on the ball...

i've got pambytes.com, gibsongrafx.com and savingcircus.com plus a couple under development on their servers.. the services they offer and the prices are as amazing as their support...

They had a deal awhile back (a year or two ago now I guess) where they gave away a bunch of 3-year subscriptions for free and I signed up to check them out. Unfortunately the amount of web stuff I was doing dropped shortly after that, so I haven't had any kind of intense or complicated things going on there, but the little I have done has been pretty good.

There have been a couple times when they were a little slow it seemed, but overall they've been good to me.

yeah, i got one of those 3 years free deals simply cuz it was free. i never ended up using it so a while back when RammStein needed some space, i let him use that....so he'd be more helpful than i am.
fwiw, i'm use dreamhost.

I get the impression that a lot of inmates are happy with Dreamhost.... Correct ??

It's just that my host, for the last four years, was taken over about a year ago and now everything is going to get bigger and better ( read slower amd more complicated - so far ).

As part of this wonderful upgrade my hosting has to be attached to a ** new ** plan; ie the cost will increase from $100 to $400 a year ...and... they're surprised that I'm considering going elsewhere

Any thoughts... I'm more than happy to pay - need about 1gig storage (so far - Asylum PoW etc chews it up) but no bells etc; don't need SSL or anything like that - SSI without using a redirect page would be nice but no-one seems to like providing it.

Dreamhost has been very good in the past, but the downtimes for the asylum have been ever increasing for a couple of years.
(I've been monitoring it for the last weeks or so... wait till I post the stats ;( ).

SSL without redirect is not possible in a multi-homed enviroment, simply because of the ways the protocols are layerd. You could assign
each website it's own ip - but Ip's are rather expensive, and were running out of IP4 ips anyhow.

1&1 is big, and the certainly have a lot of experience - they're hosting > 4 million domains here in germany.
