Topic: flash problem (Page 1 of 1)

it's not really about flash but its about whenever i go on sites with flash and mouseover the flash object a boc appears round it and i have to click on it to activate it, im not sure if its the flash player or norton or what
its not really a huge problem its just very annoying

What browser is it you're using?

Even if this may not be it just yet - see this blog post for some info on why MS IE will (have to) act just as you describe quite shorty for elements included through <object> tags...

any idea how to stop it?
im on internet explorer, and dont give me lectures about how i should change to firefox or something. Some people just go on and on and it doesn't help at all, im just on ie cos im used to it

Then don't complain when it acts in its typical buggy fashion. Even a monkey eventually learns to stop pushing the button that delivers shocks instead of monkey food.

This is the new update that Microsoft went full throttle with 4 days ago, but they've been announcing this for 2 year now.
All developers are recommended that they update their sites using javascript methods:

simple enough work around. Just time consuming.

So that's advice for the developer (I personally love the FlashObject approach). EDDII is a consumer of Flash content and I don't know if there is anything a visitor to a site that hasn't updated its code can do (other than to not use IE). It's really not much more than a nuisance and a distraction, but it must really be annoying.

Yeah, I don't think there's anything visitors can do to stop it. Probably wouldn't do any harm to email the webmaster with a link to this thread, though.


When I first tried going with the Flashobject method (which was half a year ago probably), I somehow couldn't get it to work with all the other JavaScript I have going on on tunefisch.info. But then, about two weeks ago I happened across the Mezzoblue article where the UFO approach was recommended in the comments (by its author even, I think =), and that one worked right away for me... easy enough to setup and just what I needed.

And I know you dont want to hear anymore about FireFox EDD but it works the exact same as IE, icons are nearly identical, you wont be confused about any element of it, you dont even have to be aware of tabs. Basically if your used to IE your used to FF.

I just finished putting Macromedia's javascript solution across all the servers where I work. It's fairly easily implemented and fixes the problem in IE and variants of it like Avant and AOL.

I like the syntax of FlashObject better than the Macromedia solution but it didn't seem to handle Shockwave files when I tried it with them. The Macromedia solution had seperate javascript functions for Flash and Shockwave. FlashObject did work very nicely for .swf files and I plan to use that where possible.

Interesting. Thanks for the input butcher! Since all I ever deal with are .swf files I wasn't even aware of the ShockWave issue.

I like the syntax of Stearns' FO better too, so I plan to stick with that unless something unusual comes up.

Did you ever come up with a solution to the flicker in FireFox?

Alas, I was beaten by the flicker. I had to give up on sliding the div in Firefox and just make it one sudden move. As far as I could make out, it's a redraw problem with Firefox and there doesn't seem to be much that can be done about it at this point in time.

It tells you officialy how to renable any <object> tag you have.
I had an old (old) DHTML Control for editing text around.. it was disabled and wouldn't enable again, even on mouseclick!
