Elitism and fitness are two different things. Fitness is "does it fit to the desired end purpose?" eg. checking against some fitness rules. Elitism is more.. like "let's push randomness a little towards our goal." The "several mates" selection is part of it, but then again, I can only argue in theory for now. Anyway, elitism, afaik, is more like "let's make it more probable for our thing to reach good fitness quick". So it's not required and it could cause harm instead of helping, in this case that is.
