It was one of the common situations where it was not working and when someone comes to look over your shoulder it is working. I think it had something to do with cached images. IE7 should support PNG images with 0-100 values of alpha transparency. There was a comment on IE blog about it a while back. IE5.5+ support PNG images with indexed PNG-8 transparency.
