Topic: Help sifting through old Firefox install (Page 1 of 1)

I recently upgraded my system, and this upgrade involved a complete reinstall of everything on a new drive. I still have my old drive (with my old Windows install and everything else) hooked up, and I haven't deleted anything off it yet. Part of my plan for this upgrade was to just move stuff off the old drive and onto the new drive. For the most part, this has worked out OK. I've come to a bit of a roadblock when it comes to Firefox, though. In retrospect, it probably would have been simpler to just export my bookmarks to a file and then import them again when I reinstalled Firefox. But I figured that I could just go back and do it manually. The problem is that I can't find my old bookmarks. I know they have to be there somewhere because nothing has been changed on the old drive. I tried looking through the old Documents and Settings folder, but no dice. I also tried searching for files named "bookmark," but came up with only the default bookmark file.

It was easy to locate my IE bookmarks, but I'm stumped when it comes to FF. It would also be nice to find the list of extensions I had installed, as well as the list of feeds I had in Sage (more things I could have easily done beforehand, but didn't), but right now I just want my bookmarks back. Any advice for the galactically stupid?

(Oh, and no, I can't boot up off the old drive. I tried it, but it gives me that scary bsod telling me that my computer is being shut down to prevent damage and that I will die within seven days. Or something like that. Of course, if anyone has any advice on how to boot up off the old drive, I suppose that would be helpful too.)

You're bookmarks are stored :

C:\Documents and Settings\Suho\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\su14ho.default

that's where mine are.

CPrompt: Yeah, that's what I would have thought... unfortunately, there is no Application Data folder in my Documents and Settings folder.

Somehow, it seems that my bookmarks have disappeared, but I don't quite understand how this could happen when nothing has been changed on the old drive. Everything should be there... but it isn't. Gah, this is really aggravating.

Suho - note the path! (particularlty the bold part)

The applications data folder can be hidden because it's a system folder. In your Suho directory go into the View settings and make sure that the hide system folders isn't checked.

DL: Yes, that does appear to be a lovely little tool. Would have made life a lot easier had I known about it beforehand.

But bitdamaged hit the nail on the head. Why didn't I think of that? I guess I thought that I had already set it to show all folders. Should have double-checked. Anyway, the bookmarks are there, right where I left them. Thanks for the help!

Here's a followup question, though: my first attempt was to search the entire drive for files with "bookmark" in the title, yet it didn't turn up any of the bookmark files in this folder. Is that because it was hidden? And does that mean that hidden directories are not included in searches? I suppose I can see the point to that, but it was not something I had ever thought of before.

Yes, and yes. Unless you tell windows to show the hiddens, it doesn't index them and it, thus, doesn't search them.
