does anyone know what causes the vertical spaces on the top and bottom of the page? i am afraid its just a small problem again, but the small things are sometimes upon me

First, I would suggest you remove the empty lines in the div's. I imagine that might be the problem. Despite the fact whitespace shouldn't matter in XHTML, IE frequently causes problems.

Have you played around with the top and bottom margins at all? Sometimes it may be worth using padding instead as IE has some issues with margins.

Try removing the br near just before your footer and instead put the clear:both on your footer div instead.

Try removing any padding and margins from your embed and object elements.
