Has anyone used a nice free php based newsletter? I need to set one up like...a week ago. What it's going to do is just let users sign up for newsletters that our company is going to put together and send out plain text emails with a link to the website for further information.

Thanks in advance!

Not quite following you...

Are you talking about a mailing list script, or...a system for publishing the newsletter? or a script to actually generate the email? Some combination of the three?

Don't have much to offer... other than that the last time I checked, I couldn't find anything worthwhile and suitable and resorted to just creating a Google Group instead (which works really well for the band site I did but might not be an option for a larger company..).

If you do find something nice, I'd like to know!

sorry, was in a hurry and still kind of am

I need to be able to manage the email address the newsletter is sent to as well as manage the emails sent. I don't want our company to look like spammers so I am not sure which direction to go in.

We have a large list of customers and a lot of them expressed interest in a "newsletter" to find out about special promotions. Boss wanted HTML emails but, I pretty much talked him out of that.

So, I just need to be able to send one email to a lot of people and have them have the option of being removed from the mailing list. I get one every once in a while from like NewEgg. So I guess a combination of all three. Set up the mailing list, set the contents of the email and have the program send out the emails.

Kind of sounds like spam to me though But these people will be registered so I guess not.

I made a script that may have what you want. I made it a long time ago (say at least 4 years ago), so the code is a mess and it may not work on your server. I do not plan to work on it again.

Download it here: http://zavaboy.com/mailex.zip
(I included a simple readme.)

I wouldn't use it if I were you, but if you want to try it out, go ahead. I will just say this: USE THIS PROGRAM AT YOUR OWN RISK! Mwahahaha!

Sounds like it shouldn't be too much trouble to set up.

  • html form to let the people opt in and give their email address
  • A script to handle the form submission and put the email into in a db table
  • A db table to hold the newsletter contents
  • A script to grab the newsletter contents and the list of emails and send a newsletter to each one
  • Link in the newsletter to allow the member to opt out of future mailings

We did something like this for the Justice4Pat site.
