Perhaps, but remember that this government is an embodiment of its people, or at least is supposed to be. The government isn't there to be an advocate for the minorities, but there to allow equality. Besides, looking at the other side of the glass...how do I say this? If gay couples tell the government what to do, how are they any differen't from the "religious right"? The government is supposed to be for the will of the people, right? But if the will of the people is that marriage is to be defined one way, why should the government be forced to ratify something against its will? I'm not saying homosexuals shouldn't get married, but I find it hypocritical to me that they want to force their opinion and will on others. "For reason is a property of God's...moreover, there is nothing He does not wish to be investigated and understood by reason." ~Tertullian de paenitentia Carthaginian Historian 2nd century AD
