I just added a forum to my site. I don't have any traffic right now and probably never will, but I enjoy playing around with the software.

My question?

Does anyone know of a mod/addon for PhPBB2 that would allow a user to browse his HDD and upload an image to my server and have the image display full size in a post (not as a thumbnail with a link)

I've found one called simple image upload, and there's the famous attachment mod, but neither does what I would like to do - just browse, upload, display full size. Searching the Mods database is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

thanks!

Sort of unrelated, by I feel compelled to say that I'd rather eat my own spleen while it's still inside my body than do anything related to code and phpBB.

because phpBB has been the source of security holes so often (and is coded so awfully - I have customized phpBBs for my employer) that you're virtually always better off with an alternative.

One time I was just going to make a nice, CSS-lovin' theme for phpBB, and I stopped at what I estimated to be about 1/100th of the way in, because I figured it would take less time to code an entire superior forum system from the ground up.

Meh, sorry for hijacking your thread. I'll stop now.

guess what - I did this baby here, and it indeed was less work.
The phpbb guys haven't even heard of patches - they ask you to copy/paste their 'mods' by hand!

Sorry I can't be of help to you Sleeping ;(

Hmmm.
Sounds almost as bad as having to use IE as a browser at work.

Your feedback is well taken. Coding one from scratch is beyond my current knowledge and given I don't expect much traffic or posts it is unlikely much damage could be done to the site - I'm a big believer in backups too and I backup religiously (DVD and external HDD). as for patching by hand, that's ok, i code 90% in Textpad (simple text editor) ... I'm used to Ctrl C and Ctrl V.

- so I'm stuck with opensource turnkey solutions for now.
I found one called Uploadpic..we'll see how that goes.

TB: great job on this forum btw - you should be proud.

Problem with phpbb is also that it's so popular, that many attacks are made by automated scripts that activly search for php bbs (for example, via google, though google has blocked some queries to find phpbbs), and, once you can execute code on a system, it's not that far to own the box ( since linux kernels do have bugs (and 0 day exploits) and they're rarely updated since you need to reboot the box).

So even if your site is pretty small, do those backups at the very least.

quietly under the radar .. Ramm slips in a better BB to use and is the closest to vBull of any other BB out there .. and do note there is a converter from phpbb2 to wbb .. take the time to do your research with this

I'm not sure I can recall witnessing an up-to-date phpBB system having a big security breach, it's usually the ones that don't bother to update...still has horrible code, though.

I'm not really into Woltlab's license.

I have seen rootforum.de - a forum for and by experienced linux admins who routinly place high priority on security - be cracked by a 0-day phpbb exploit.

Think that about sums up that.

actually, I must admit I was mistaken.
It was a 5 day old exploit that had been presented (offline!) at the Cebit.

Still, with the 'either patch by hand, or reapply all your mods (by hand) when upgraiding to the new version) mode of work,
I would not use a phpbb.

TB:
Security is an issue with everything digital today...cell phones to servers...but I really see what you mean about patching by hand...not only security but any mods as well.

I was able to use the famous attachment mod but what a nightmare to install. It went relatively well with subsilver after 30 minutes of opening files, searching for the code, making the change etc.

Unfortunately, when I then changed to the nosebleed template, the browse button to upload an image gets truncated vertically...the height is not what it should be and as a result you can barely read the button even though it works.

i found the tpl file as well as where it could be impacted in the css file (i.e. the tr) but so far no solution.

thanks to everyone for their feedback...this is just a development exercise for me...the forum is live but i don't expect any members this year - but I'm learning lots, that's the good news.

If you have a script to add it with a thumbnails look for the code that prints the post and change the code from a link to an image to just an image displaying it, I can't be that impossible to find.
