Topic: Title on A-Tags (Page 1 of 1)

My company (again) tries to standardize on 'titles on links' for search engine friendliness ( accessibility is second ;( ),
and to my mind, titles on text links are bloody damn stupid.

What's your take on this?

I find them damn stupid most of the time, but if (for whatever reason) you have very iconized nav buttons or the like, then they're useful (even if the implementations across each browser vary so much).

Its fairly redundant from an accessibility point of view, but doesnt have a negative effect in any way i don't think? Maybe annoying for screen readers perhaps is the only disadvantage i can see.

I use them alot for icons in my application, but this is because they dont have text accompanying.

i for once find them very useful to provide additional information on where the link is going.

Eh...some people use them religiously and it can get really annoying. Like a nav menu with a link that says "Ooga"..._and_ a title="Ooga"; so when you hover over Ooga, you get another Ooga right on top of it - and if the text isn't exactly the same, you might end up with title attribute text hiding what's under it.

Take for example http://www.udm4.com/ which has some extra text on some items, but for most of them it's just redundant and annoying.

As other said above, it's ok if the title attribute does not repeat the content of its node. Otherwise it's pointless and annoying.

reisio: Duh, that udm4 thing is a joke. It claims to be an 'Accessible Website Menu' but the sub-menus don't show up with JavaScript disabled.

I understand this, but for me tooltips dont come up unless i hover over the button for a few seconds.. So even if the text is the same as the button i don't particularly see it as a problem.

Maybe other browsers show tooltips as soon as you hover? Then it would be annoying.
