It arrived yesterday, runs like a dream

Dell Precision 490
Two Intel® Xeon® 5050 (3.0GHz,667,2x2MB) (shows up as 8 logical processors in task manager...)
2GB DDR2 533 Quad Channel FBD Memory (2x1GB)
128MB nVidia Quadro FX550 Graphics Card
160gb sata2 7,200rpm hd

The hard drive and graphics card are a little wimpy in comparision to the rest of the spec but that is because mainly I just wanted lots of raw processing power for rendering.
It renders 8 threads at a time in cinema4d (my 3d program of choice..).

hell yeah! now go and show us some of your new cinema4d stuff!

Going to download win xp pro 64bit & the 64bit drivers from dell and give it a spin

question...

hopefully I will be able to find 64bit drivers for all of my hardware but in the eventuality that I cannot is it still possible to use the old 32bit ones?

aka, similar to when we use the nasty 16bit hd drivers used in compatability mode?

Just kiddin', it's rather wise to "think" before doing.
Answer a: afaik you won't find drivers for all of your hardware.
Answer b: yes, backwards compatibility is possible, and crappy.

All in all, some say Win64 is kewl, others say it doesn't get enough support -yet.

The rest is up to you.

Hey... but don't cry for me argentina.... one of my friends is running 3ooMhz & 64Mg of ram....and he just took it to the repair shop and spent 50 bucks putting it all in a new box!

Btw if I may be so nosey.... what did you pay for that machine?

I think it was worth every penny though

Without any experience, what I've heard is 64bit support for windows is awful and linux is still the only way to go to get the most from your chip as you can compile your software specifically to any chip 64bit dual core included.

Some definate things to upgrade though...

I wasnt really aware of this at the time of ordering but I really should have gone with 4gb of ram build option as I am currently incurring a performance hit by the memory only operating in dual channel mode (266mhz instead of 533mhz that it SHOULD be, quite a bottleneck I think).

I also think I should get a proper sound card (current is onboard) as I have noticed in cinema that when rendering using all 8 cpu threads, sound in the music app that I am playing (winamp or mplayer) becomes garbled... I think I have the nasty kind of onboard sound that dumps all the work on the processor
