Topic: First trip to the US

I could hardly believe my luck 10 days ago when my boss offered me the opportunity to travel to Boston on a business trip in order to work on a project common to the company I work for and another one, based in Cambridge. I left London worried but excited last Wednesday to discover that I was actually going to stay next to Harvard University, be within walking distance to the MIT and be able to eat as much seafood as I wanted.
Today I am back in London, rich with an exceptional experience and thought I would share it, as I think it is really worth going to Boston if you get the chance - even if you don't, if you happen to look for a holiday destination.
Perhaps this is all very obvious to you all, but just in case it isn't....

yep, Boston is a nice place to go. A bit expensive but nice. Lot's of history there.

Boston is simply nice. Nice foot, amazing aquarium, whale watching, the oldest subway in the U.S.., I believe... sigh, all them memories

Comparing to the UK, I found it very cheap but obviously I don't know about the rest of the US. $1.25 for a subway ride from Sommerville through to Boston via Harvard (I don't know how many miles it is, but it seemed like a lot) is amazingly cheap.

... not to mention the oldest pub in the US, the science museum, and much much more. The funny thing for us European is that Boston is actually one of the oldest places in the US, but it is was only founded around 1630, which is so new! There is a very British feel to the place - obviously - but the nice thing is it doesn't actually feel European. And it is also a place to meet very interesting people.

I'll be in Boston in October.. it's a lovely place....Cape Cod, a short drive away, has incredibly beautiful beaches.

I just came back from London and the prices are very scary...on the same trip I paid 2 Euros for a train trip from the burbs to Paris while I paid 16 pounds for a similar trip to London Paddington

Hey kimson - nice going. Tell us about it after you're back home. What - worried one of the inmates who actually lives in Boston might find out about it and attempt to meet you?


Oh well. Glad to hear you weren't too traumatized by our fair city. (And that no Big Dig ceiling tiles fell on you . THAT would be bad for the tourism biz.)

SleepingWolf - isn't it horrifying indeed? And what do you get for £16? Trains that smell like poo (and whatever else) because of the very bad isolation of the toilets, rubbish everywhere and timetable change every other day... Ah never mind...

Steve - Well, too bad I didn't know you were there, you could have shown me around as I was on my own Saturday and Sunday!

Thus the suggestion that you probably should have mentioned your trip before you went.

actually the French train smelled of urine (a homeless person)...that night we ate hamburgers at the Heathrow Hilton Hotel..only 15 pounds for a burger with fries...what a sweet deal.
