Ok, Here`s the deal. I have recently done a clean install of Win2KPro, due to some issues I couldn`t fix any other way. Some have recurred, the virii are gone.
1) My Intellipoint mouse software won`t operate unless I open the software dialog from the control panel first.
2) Standby and Hibernate modes..don`t. It wakes itself up withih 10 minutes or so.
New (and most irritating) issue:
Alert dialogs from helpfixpc.com and rclean.com. they pop up incessantly. I`ve run AVG(always in the background and everyday at 11:00) , Spyware Terminator, Adware, Spybot, Hijackthis, and doublekiller, (just in case) None have found anything but tracking cookies. And ZoneAlarm is running as well.
Neither of their websites have any way to contact them. Any help would be most appreciated in solving these issues.
If the only advise you can give is " Use a better Operating System," Please don`t bother.

I've had pretty good success with this finding 'issues.' Just make sure you back up the regisgtry when asked and the first couple of times take a good look at what it finds as 'issues' and wants to remove.

I let it install to the Recycle Bin... then I just right click and run it whenever I feel this ol' clunker is working OT.

Not sure if that`s what I`m lookin for, NoJive, as they are not unused files. They pop up 7 or 8 times an hour, but I`ll run it and see what happens.

reisio: thanks for nothin. I didn`t ask for a spelling lesson, I asked for help.

<edit> Nope, NoJive. Didn`t help.</edit>

Have you tried running msconfig and having a look at startup?

For that matter, have you disabled the Messenger service? A lot of popups can be transmitted via that. It's one ginormous vulnerability that can sometimes bypass whatever software firewall you may be running.

I say this with no sarcasm whatsoever: a clean install shouldn't show any of the symptoms you described.

If possible, I would recommend another clean install in the following manner:
- download and burn/store/etc. all the drivers you will need for your hardware. This way, you won't need to connect to the internet for anything
- install Windows 2k Professional and nothing else, and DO NOT connect your computer to any type of network. Seriously, no physical connection to any external network until near the end.
- install the Windows 2k service pack 4
- install drivers for your hardware and reboot after each one
- I would recommend you install your intellimouse software first, even before installing your video card drivers. You'll be stuck at 800x600 VGA, but at least you will be able to begin the deduction process.
- start installing software and note the behaviour of your PC after each install. This will let you eliminate possibilities and get to the root of the problem.
- if everything is installed and no problems arise, then make sure your shields are up cap'n and connect to the internet

I realize that this is a lot of work, but a methodic approach lets you systematically narrow down the source of the problem. The reason we don't connect to the internet is that it allows us to get a base configuration to use as a control.

Just one note to add. If you do a clean install make sure thet the disk or partiton where the OS is going to be installed is really clean.

1) Delete everything on it. !
2) Format the partiton to clean out some hidden files from realy clever anoyances or the stuff you did forget.

Just putting the windows cd in the drive and running setup will not "clean" your system. A lot of programs and a big part from the registry are simply used again.

Also if you see some viri or trojan or whatever on your system put their names in google someone might just have written a tool to remove it. Or a guide how to remove it manually.

Last thing, reisio got a point with the other OS, you don't have to switch but a linux live disk off some sort is handy to clean you system or just to wipe the corrupted partition.

This just isn't necessary with so many other operating systems. From what I've heard it doesn't even happen with Mac OS, and you can pay Apple loads of money and still be a consumer whore if you want (though IIRC the price is about half that of Windows).

db, if the popup messages have "windows messager service" as their title, they're pretty harmless (and annoying too..) and you can disable them if you know where to look for the setting. We had an FAQ on it I think...

How can I block those annoying Windows Messenger Service spam popups?

But..wow. Can't really be more than four years since we started that FAQ thing?

Thanks all. Before I could get to your replies, my speakers and modem stopped working, too.
I did a format and reinstall in the method suggested by silence, and the onlly issue I have now is that the modem can`t hear a dial tone. When you engage the modem, you can hear static on the line, it lasts for 2 or 3 minutes, and stops. I had my phone co. do a line check, and they didn`t find anything wrong. The static doesn`t happen on the phone, just the computers (tried it with 3 different boxes). Occasionally, it will engage without the static, maybe once out of 30 attempts, in which case I get connected. So I`m witing this from a friends house.
My guess is that the line check stops at the junction box outside, and I have an internal wiring issue. Any other ideas are, of course, welcomed.

I will disable the messenger service when I get home.

HA ! It seems the new modem I just installed was faulty out of the box. Put the old one back in and it works fine. Go figure.
