I did a format and reinstall in the method suggested by silence, and the onlly issue I have now is that the modem can`t hear a dial tone. When you engage the modem, you can hear static on the line, it lasts for 2 or 3 minutes, and stops. I had my phone co. do a line check, and they didn`t find anything wrong. The static doesn`t happen on the phone, just the computers (tried it with 3 different boxes). Occasionally, it will engage without the static, maybe once out of 30 attempts, in which case I get connected. So I`m witing this from a friends house. My guess is that the line check stops at the junction box outside, and I have an internal wiring issue. Any other ideas are, of course, welcomed. I will disable the messenger service when I get home.
