I use a program called File Renamer Basic whenever I want to do some batch file renaming. It has some great options, plus a preview feature that lets you see how the file names will change before you do something stupid. FYI, for renaming things based on date/time or other IPTC data in an image, I use the batch renamer in IMatch. But it doesn't sound like that's what you want to do, since the order the images were taken in is what's causing the problem in the first place.
