This leaves me with mixed feelings.

I simply cannot look at the death of Saddam as a bad thing, in any light.

But how many other people are responsible, including US and European leaders who helped prop him up and turned a blind eye to or even encouraged his actions?

can't answer that, but it does make me very afraid for the troops that are in Iraq right now. There will be some serious fighting going on if this is carried out. Which I am sure that it will.

Same as DL. And it's not like we don't know that every 'prop' undertaken through out 'history' hasn't ended in a similar state of chaos.

The only history being repeated here that we seem reluctant to acknowledge is that once elected, all leaders apparently get hit with the same 'Stupid Stick.'

All things considered, and being that I am against the Death Penalty - I would rather see Sadam put in a US Penitentiary for life without chance of Parol.

He deserves to live, to witness events as they transpire, and become an object of therapy for all those who were victim to his cruelties. They should allow those who were victimized by him to visit him, to face the monster of their reality.

I will not miss him when he is dead.

I'm not one to take killing lightly, or even the judgement of other human beings for that matter, but imho this is a case of good riddance to bad rubbish from my very limited point of view.

I do believe in capital cases the family of the victims should pronounce judgement and I'm sure there's a few that would be in favor of his being put to death (odds are yes? he's killed hundreds at least). If sentenced to death he'll be afforded the time to make his peace, that begins now, and in the end it's very civilized I think. Life is fatal and justice is something that needs to be carried out when all is said and done.

I by no means agree or support saddam, but by killing him two things will happen;

1)he'll become a martyr and create more unrest and violence as his supporters try and avenge his death.

2) USA and those who over throw him become just like saddam when they kill him.

also JK i'm of the opinion that NO ONE, dont care what they've done, should be "legally" killed. lock the bastard up and throw away the key, but its not for a court to decide who lives or dies.

Well... nice move, USA. Kill him before he has a chance to speak. Strangely, i never saw any of his defense words mediatized. We get a lot of news about the elections and minor change in politics, but nothing on Sadam speaches. This *is* a bit more important than the OJ Simpson trial for instance. But no one cares hey? They feed you white noise to cover the foulplay, and u don't care.

Personally, I can't help feeling a little sorry for him. I can't say for sure that he has done anything that hasn't been (and isn't currently being) perpetrated by leaders of other countries the world over. For instance, take a look at the inhumanities being commited in China at this very moment in time. It should also be noted that he would never have had the power he had if it had not been for The West meddling in Middle Eastern affairs.

What does it benefit anyone to put this man to death? He is the product, rather than the creator, of a culture and regime that is far beyond the comprehension of most Westerners in our comfortable and sheltered society. As has been pointed out elsewhere also, he was responsible for far fewer deaths in his reign than the body-count attributable to our own forces as a result of our recent efforts to "liberate" Iraq.

Some part of me feels it would be more appropriate, however silly, to go with Norman Kember's take on this - despite not necessarily sharing his views otherwise...

Can't speak for the current regime, but the US federal government throughout the years...

First Gulf War under Lord Bush I, sanctions under Lord Clinton, and the current war under Lord Bush II, not to mention all the clandestine operations carried out in the region throughout the years, those that we know of, one could certainly make that case.

Lucky for them, they "don't do body counts."

Sure, Saddam definately deserves his fate IMO, but I could think of quite a few others in the western world that should be facing the gallows beside him, but if I were to name names then I would probably be classified as an enemy combatant and thrown into one of those new detention camps that Halliburton is constructing.

Yeah, I should have linked over to an article in that reference since it is kind of a buried news story. Basically, back around February of this year, $400mil was allocated by DHS to Halliburton subsidiary KBR for the construction of detention centers here on US soil, which they claim is for "immigration emergency" or some nonsense. I have a hard time believing anything out of government these days since everything we have been told basically since 9/11 is half-truth or just outright lies.

That, in conjunction with the vaguely worded Military Commissions Act of 2006, which gives the POTUS and Defense Sec. the power to basically declare anyone as an enemy combatant was where my semi-sarcastic remark above came from.
