Topic: Common Windows video codec (for Director project) (Page 1 of 1)

Hey all,

I am on the lookout for a video codec that all Windows versions that are widely used support out of the box... the videos are going to be part of a Macromedia Director "give-away CD". Audience isn't going to be tech-savvy at all for the most part, so it pretty much has got to work the first time they put the disc into their PC, without any fiddling.

What we have been using up to now (the CD is as good as finished) is the "Intel/Ligos Indeo Video 3.2 (IV32)" codec. But, of course, the wise men at Microsoft decided to not include it with Windows Vista and the new Media Player version any more as I just discovered.
Not even as an extension through their wmplugins.com site

Does anyone have a tip or two on how to convert these .avi's so they use a codec that is even more common than this Indeo thing?

File size isn't going to become much of a problem as long as it's not more than 2.5x the current Indeo AVI size...

Might not be appropriate - but what about flash?

We can't change much of the Director movie any more, actually... but it's an idea if you can easily integrate flash movies with a Director 8.5 project.

Just replacing the AVIs would probably be easier,..

But if that is not going to get any better than with Indeo, I'll check =)

I've used VirtualDub for this kind of thing. But I would think about taking TP's suggestion. I would think that one Macromedia product could integrate with another. But I've never used either

Give the suckers Ogg/Theora.

Or multiple formats and a windows version detection script in your director

Thanks to mas and his Total Video Converter suggestion though I now have "MS MPEG4 AVI" versions which run fine under Vista and XP.

The big unknown with these are the older "codec-less" Windows versions. Does anyone have a relatively fresh Win98/2000/XP installation at hand to give one of the videos a try?

kuckus: If I had seen this a day ago i could have tried it on a laptop that i recently popped on a codec pack, but if its worth anything I'm pretty sure the standard MPEG4 you mentioned will play on a fresh install of win 2k.

if i recall correctly, back when i was building director projects in college, we used QT, and included an installer on the disc. we also included a script to check for QT, and if it wasn't there, it would prompt the user and/or pop up the installer or something. i may be off here though, as the last time i used director was a few years back
