A homeowners' association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/27/peace.wreath.ap/index.html

"Three or four" people out of 200 homes complained. The average household in Colorado is 2.53 people. That's 3 or 4 out of an estimated 506 people, or about 0.7%.

Less than 1% of the residents complained, their complaints based on outright ignorance, and Jensen's beliefs are quashed. Not to mention the committee members who were fired for disagreeing with the complainers.

I want to move to Canada more and more.

Yep, I just read that one this evening in class... How much do you want to bet it was one household that complained?

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything.

Kearns fired all five committee members.

And I wonder which household.....

I agree with JKMabry - pacifism should be defended with brutal force and violence! Shock and Awe!

I reckon this Kearns is just making a fuss through fear that allowing one (meaningless) symbol to be displayed without prior consent could lead to everyone following suit. Another case of slamming the boot down hard early to avoid having to untangle a growing issue later.

The long and the short of it: yet another case of the major minority ruling.

The Peace Symbol, I am told, has been used in correlation with Satanism. I doubt that in this instance it was meant for that purpose, but many people have problems about little things like that.

So too has the cross.

Is the upside down cross used in Satanism, or was it used in something else I'm thinking of?

Regardless of what it allegedly represents...this is silly shit. Seems like the holidays always brings out the closet morons.

If this were a normal municipality, I think I'd be outraged at any censorship, but when one signs an agreement to live in a "gated-community" or another compound run by a corporate structure, you get what you bargained for. Don't like it, move somewhere else.

I recall an X-Files episode about a gated community. I think the episode was called Arcadia. In standard X-Files fashion, it was creepy. When my husband and I started looking for our first home, the very first we looked at was in an association. Driving through that neighborhood was like being transported right into that episode of the X-Files. People stared at you funny going down the street because they knew you didn't belong. We couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I think this Kearns guy is on a power trip. Associations don't have to be ruled by a democracy. What is stated in the covenant is law. I think it's sad that there are people so willing to hand over their freedoms for a little convenience and (perceived) security. I think the whole progression towards people moving into these types of communities is a symptom of a greater problem. But I think that's for another thread. The peace symbol as satanic? That's the first time I've ever heard that one. Makes me wonder if those that complained have Christmas trees in their houses and know the origin of their holiday symbol.

I have to admire her fortitude - $1000 is an expensive wreath, it's too bad though she's paying the price for someone else's stupidity.

[edit]
in case anyone is intersted, here are a couple of links on the origin of the peace symbol, I know I learned something new.

Whoa:

quote:
...the power of this symbol is emphasized
by the fact that various far-right and fundamentalist american
groups, during the 1970s, seriously considered forbidding it
(they have spread the idea of satanic associations and
condemned it as a communist sign).

It's interesting what people will believe. When I went to Christian school years ago, I was also told the Mercedes Benz logo was satanic. When one kid, who was a fan of their cars, drew the symbol on a sheet of paper, one of the teachers confiscated and burned it.
