Raccoon napping at the apex of the ≈>10m sable palm out front. I saw him climb in by way of the limbs at the top from an adjacent (water) oak limb around noon one day. There's a big family of them living here; somtimes at night you can go out and shine a flashlight up into the (southern live) oak and see scores of reflecting eyes... reminds me of the Rats of NIMH.

The word "raccoon" is derived from the Algonquian word aroughcoune, "he who scratches with his hands."

Waschbär in German, orsetto lavatore in Italian, єнот in Ukrainian, mosómedve in Hungarian, vaskebjørn in Danish and Norwegian, tvättbjörn in Swedish, szop in Polish, mýval in Czech, wasbeer in Dutch, pesukarhu in Finnish, araiguma (洗&#29066 in Japanese, huànxióng (浣&#29066 in Chinese, all mean "washing bear."*

... and "raton laveur" in French, which implies two things: the French seem to find it looks more like a rat (raton) rather than a bear; and "laveur", which implies the washing bit.
