Hi,
I'm brand new to this type of work, need help please :
I want to be able to cut pieces of movies playing on my pc and work on them or put them in flash swf movies...I want to extract short sequences of 20 seconds max ....

1/ Do I need to copy the movie on my pc ? ( window ) ... is there some kind of security or else wich will block me of copying or else from a dvd ????

2/ I imagine I need some kind of sofware to "copy" or "edit" the movie in a format wich will be compatible with Flash right ? how do I do that ? with what ??? what kind of format is the best ???

3/ When I have the movie in the right format to be read by Flash, is there any way I can cut it to extract the scene I'm interested to have ??? ( I would like to work on each image _ 28 per second right ?- in Photoshop , then put them back together to remake the sequence with my additional effects...)

If anybody had any hints on how , with what and how to do it type of comment, I would really appreciate... thx for taing the time...

No, but it might be more convenient - depends, I guess.

There's some kind of "security" that might _try_ (depending on your OS), but ultimately it will always be trivial to circumvent.

Most of the usual formats DVD ripping sofware uses or defaults to is going to be importable by Flash.

Whichever you can most conveniently stand to look at/listen to _and_ wait on to be used to rip.

Well, if for example you've imported the movie into Flash, you can do plenty of GUI-based video editing from there.

What effects?

I'd probably use mplayer to rip, then ffmpeg or mencoder (they do many of the same things, being mostly from the same codebase) to handle splitting from video to individual frames and vice versa. There is video editing software that can apply "effects" without need for manual separation, etc., though, so you might want to choose your path based on what effects you want to apply, and whether you really need to split to individual frame sto do it.

Thx Reisio ..ok, since yesterday, I found a prog named Ulead video Studio 9 ... It takes scenes directly from the dvd ... I can cut and export the work after ... I did export in Mpeg but my flash (6) doesn't read that format but is ok when I export in Avi... don,t know why... I'll go look for what you did mention for splitting to individual frames... I'm not very good in flash, rather work in Photoshop then re-assemble the frames after... thx for the help !!

Ah, that's quite an old version; more recent ones unsurprisingly can import a larger variety of formats.

For example: ffmpeg -i file.avi %d.jpeg should dump out each frame into individual JPEG files.

This page covers how to use mencoder to do the reverse. You can probably use mencoder for both processes (it wouldn't surprise me if the same is true for ffmpeg), I've just never bothered to look it up.
