I'm working on a digg style voting site that allows you to vote more along the lines of a "hot or not" and I'm having a hard time designing the display.

Right now I have this:

Which is boring me. Anyone have some ideas for spicing it up?

IMHO the hover areas are too small.

The whole thing could use a hard shadow ( i.e. black fill with 1-2px feather offseted by 1px downward ) to stand out.

The text at the bottom might no be needed.

The 'slider' could be replaced by a thumb down & thumb up that shrink/grows depending on which 'hover' area you hover. Or maybe there should be only one hand in the center, pointing up/down and changing size of vertical position based on the user's pick.

I just made a mockup animation in PS and IR:

Also the markup is insanely dense. It must be possible to optimize that and use a single event handler for all the active parts.

HTH

True about the markup.

I'm cheating a bit here and using some of the built in methods with the Rails framework.

All right I like yours better. can I steal some ideas from it?

And do you happen to have those thumb icons? I've been looking for somethign like that.

Sure you can steal some ideas from it. Why do you think I posted that image ? To tease you ?

I made the thumbs myself after having a quick look at Digg. It's a very simple "pixel art" stuff. Grab them from the animated gif. After a second look at Digg's thumbs, mine are a bit shorter. I tend to prefer mines

JSYK, I used 1337 as a metasyntactic variable, actually I wonder why on earth I sticked to CCT instead of using FOO

Heh, yes Ian I found a saved favourites .htm file from last year that I thought I'd lost. It's rather huge so I've been going through it booking again tremendous sites like that.
I think metasyntactic variable is a great name poi, could well describe my mind as being a "place where content can vary".
