I've been having that problem with all windowses and mac os x as well, that often, they turn into a sluggish state when something is working heavily in the background - but not that heavily that I shouldn't be able to work in the foreground. Especially, if I have a VM running at 100% (two cpus in the machine though). Nevertheless response time to human is way more important than 'important calculation' in a background process... Now, all the linux boxes I've used where basically sshed to without a gui... they never felt sluggish :), but it's also a quite different level of user interface... how about the linux desktops? So long, ->Tyberius Prime Loading...
