I'm looking at getting a new monitor so I can set up dual screen. I'm a web developer (in case you didn't know) and would like a good screen that will last in the way of size and usability for the kind of work I do.

Right now I have my Gateway EV700. It's a 17 inch and rages from 800x600 to 1280x1024. I currently use 1024x768 because I'm comfortable with it at that resolution.

I'm looking for a LCD monitor that can handle at least 1600x1200. But right now I'm looking for recommendations.

All I can say is buy one made by an actual manufacturer (not a VAR) ... Samsung comes to mind ... and be sure to check one out in person before buying (unless you have a lot of patience and a store with a flawless return policy).

I do like widescreens; it's not just more space, but they fit better into a normal human's vision (we see in widescreen).

I'm still on the fence over more than one monitor... it seems like a decent DE or WM should suffice.

I like the HP 2035's that I have at work. Very clear, supports 1600x1200, I've only had a problem with one of them and it didn't work out of the box.

On the issue of having multiple monitors, I think more is better
I've got a dual setup on a desktop at work, and a 2nd monitor hooked up to my laptop, then the two computers running Synergy, so I can use both computers and all 4 screens seamlessly with one keyboard and mouse. It's been the greatest thing ever.
The HP 2035's also rotate, so you can change it to portrait orientation as opposed to the standard landscape. Pretty much the opposite effect of having a widescreen, but having the 4th monitor on its side comes in handy a lot of times. I definitely wouldn't want them all on their end though.
Now if only I could mount the 2nd monitor on my laptop above my laptop instead of next to it, I wouldn't ask for much more (Well, there is always this )

I have a friend who, when it's time to buy a monitor, takes along a disk loaded with a several different "tests." Geometry... rendering and that sort of thing. He then scrupulously examines the screen looking for missing/burnt out pixels and where those are located on the screen.

Why?.... because manufacturers, generally speaking, have what they consider an acceptable failure rate when it comes to pixels (picture elements). So for arguments sake let's say the acceptable failure rate is 5 'neighboring' pixels.... or whatever... Well if 3 of those failures at dead center of the screen you're pretty much SOL. CHECK THE FINE PRINT. If your retailer says.... oh no problem just bring it back.... get it in writing.

I personally wouldn't put up with a single noticeable pixel problem. It's not even the price, it would drive me insane and be worse than useless.
