gotta go- quick answer: POSIX is important because applications generally work in every operating system... so apps work on every linux distro, on unix, on BSDs, and (sometimes) on Mac. It's just the interfacing layer between apps. If the interfaces are the same, then I can run [url=http://stellarium.org/]Stellarum[/url] on all linux's, Unix, and on Mac (and even on Win). That's why it's important, because everything will work everywhere (everything with POSIX) Get to the rest of your concerns later...
