Well this could prove interesting.

The other bit that passed my ears a few days ago which I found a tad hard to believe was that... Fred Thompson could well emerge as the Republican candidate for president with Rudy as the VP hopeful.

I feel inspired to say... Giuliani is a giant tool, and if he's elected (I highly doubt it, but just let's say), I'll be moving from this country much sooner than I planned.

I think this is the best thing that could happen to the Republican party.

Get rid of the Religious Right baggage and become more moderate.

Of course, there is no way that this will happen, unfortunately. The Religious Right knows that it will be slitting its own throat if it tries to back a Third Party candidate against the rest of the Republican party. Divide and conquer - the Democrats will win easily under such conditions.

In other words, it is a bluff by the Religious Right, IMHO.

I think this quote from Gary Bauer says it all:

quote:
I can?t think of a bigger disaster for social conservatives, defense conservatives and economic conservatives than Hillary Clinton in the White House.

That being said, I believe the majority of conservatives will not back a third party bid solely on the abortion issue. While it's true the conservative voting base is not enthusiastic about the current candidates, I believe it's also true they aren't suicidal politically.

So I think Guiliani actually has a pretty good chance with most conservatives from what I can see so far.

A Thompson/Guiliani ticket? Yeah, that sounds pretty far-fetched but stranger things have happened
