Probably the closest animals to pets that I have right now are the birds I take pictures of. I love how they actually have so little room for 'facial' expressions yet how in my eyes they have so much character and emotion.

Arthurio, that last one is great. Love how he's looking at you. It's the Godpidgeon

Might not be the right place to ask, but how do you get the background to blur like that while the...er...subject is nice and crisp?

All I have is a digital camera. Canon a560IS.

Well it's about aperture/focal length (f) which determines how much of the picture is in focus and what is blurred. There are a lot of tutorials about that but I'll draw an illustrative picture to get my point across quickly.

cool. if you i'll check on some tutorials. what I found you had to have one of the fancy smancy cameras with the cool lens. I'll look up how I adjust the aperture on my camera. Thanks

You have a great compact camera. You just need to use the M or Av modes just like on a Canon EOS. It should have almost all the same manual controls. Lens have very little to do with this.

That first bird photo - what a great expression. Any idea what type of bird? Never seen anything like that.

Oh and great explanation of depth of field!

It's some sort of gull. Perhaps a herring gull. Thanks.

Well, he's not exactly mine (he belongs to the parents-in-law), but I guess he's part of the family. His name is Dori, and he's a Beagle/Spaniel mix.

Dori

You can probably tell by the look on his face, but he's not really big on cameras. He'll deliberately look away if you show up with a camera, so you have to trick him into looking at you by making a loud noise or something like that.

On another note... not to be a pest or anything, but I've noticed that the past few POWs haven't included a link to the FAQ in the first post. Yes, most of us probably know where the POW FAQ is by now, but the link is there for newcomers who might not be familiar with what we're doing here (and might not know where to find the FAQ). And it's not all that difficult to make a FAQ link...

See?

(Click "Edit" on this post if you're not sure how to make FAQ links. It's so ridiculously easy you'll be shocked.)

Unlike Suhos parents-in-laws dog, ours aren't camera shy (except in the first picture maybe)

This guy isn't exactly a pet, just someone who found his way into our yard and was driving the dogs crazy.

I tried everything over the weekend to get a decent picture of my fish, but between a confused auto focus and fast fish, I just had to give up.

Ooooh, fish are really hard, I've tried everything to no avail... the light seems to reflect back off the water, even though you can see them clearly yourself!!

But I've got 'em beat... I got a waterproof camera... I'm goin' in after them
