Driver Update Can Cause Vista Deactivation

quote:
"After weeks of grueling troubleshooting, I've finally had it confirmed by Microsoft Australia and USA ? something as small as swapping the video card or updating a device driver can trigger a total Vista deactivation. Put simply, your copy of Windows will stop working with very little notice (three days) and your PC will go into "reduced functionality" mode, where you can't do anything but use the web browser for half an hour."

I mean...that is ridiculous!

yup. I heard about this on a podcast not long after Vista had came out. I put an extra gb of memory in my computer (Win XP Pro) and I actually had to re-activate it too. Just like it was never activated. Stupid.

This is more restrictive than they have been, but, MircoSoft has been moving in this direction since Windows2000. I remember reading an article, back in 2001, about these kinds of restrictions being put in place for XP. It is the primary reason I have been migrating all our computers off Windows and have not allowed XP or Vista to be installed on any of our computers.

Apparently this is not just a problem with Vista but also with Windows Server 2003. So it's not exactly new or unique to Vista. Not that this is a good thing, of course, but looking at the big picture Vista doesn't deserve any more hate than some other Windows products (which is kind of like saying a political leader is "no worse than Hitler," but whatever).

I guess since you didn't actually compare WS to Hitler, you still win on a technicality...

I was actually going for the Bill Gates = Hitler angle... and by "win" I meant "lose." It makes sense in my twisted mind, really.

Although I certainly have killed a large amount of people, I simply am not in Hitler's league.

I guess we all lose

Right, because bad = good. Not sure where I was that I didn't get that.

So does that mean WS actually does like Vista??

It should be noted, as usual, that these measures do nothing to hinder piracy, but cause endless problems for legitimate users. Nothing changes.

Good point. Build a better mouse trap, you get a better mouse. Take what measures you want to try to stop piracy, but making the user of a legit copy of software (OS none the less) reactivate simply because they had to upgrade their memory, new video card, etc...is just stupid. "I've already activated it once and you said it was legit, now you want me to tell you again." I don't like to repeat myself!
