I need a new book to read. Feeling something Sci-Fi. Not fantasy, but Sci-Fi. Anyone read anything lately that was really good?

And please, don't suggest something like I,Robot, Enders Game, etc... Something that might be a little less main stream. I've read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy books and am having a hard time finding something that grabs me.

Thanks in advance.

I've been reading nothing but reference and poetry books for the past couple of years C:\ so I'll be interested to see what other people suggest too.
The last true Sc-Fi I read was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. I really enjoyed this rather short story and read it in a couple of days if memory serves me, which often times it does not

All the recent sci-fi I have read has been Robert Heilein. If you like hard sci-fi and haven't read him (unlikely that both conditions will be true, but whatever), I would recommend giving his stuff a whirl. I've been mostly going through his short fiction, and have yet to tackle his full-length novels (Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, etc.).

Well I prefer Military Scifi, David Drake's, "Redliners" is my favorite. But any of the Hammer's Slammers, novels will do in a pinch. I also really like John Ringo, I'm in the middle of his Posleen series, which begins with "A Hymn Before Battle."

I just ran across a new book this weekend, "War Machine" by Andy Remic at Barnes & Noble. It looks promising. It's on my to read list.

Off the top of my head - Dan Simmons, Stephen Baxter, Alastair Reynolds ?

I don't know how popular these writers are to you ( they're relatively unknown down here ) but you may like their novels.

I just finished reading The Fading Sun Trilogy by C. J. Cherryh which I thought was great. Also would recommend Robert Heilein's books as well.

Wow. I just noticed that I misspelled "Heinlein." Dropped the first "n" there.

Cool. Thanks for the suggestions. Some of the authors I've never heard of. Gonna check out some of Robert Heinlein's stuff. Looks pretty interesting. Might get Stranger in a Strange Land. Looks pretty good.

Thanks again! And thanks a lot for not suggesting stuff that is pretty main stream. I asked a friend of mine the other day about a good sci-fi book or series...he suggested Hitchhikers Guide... I was about ready to smack him...

Have any of you read Arthur C. Clarke's Rama novels? That's some good stuff.

Might not be what you're asking for- but The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is an outstanding read in the realm of fiction. This first 3 books are just *fun* to read.

Slaps Petskull with a wet noodle.

Thanks, but I've read most of the Sci-Fi classics like this. I still haven't read 3001 from Arthur C. Clarke though.

If you're still looking, A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge is great "hard" sci-fi.

The wikipedia entry has more information than I could possibly post here, so you can chew on that for a synopsis.

oh no no no. I loved it. Loved all of the novels in that story. I have just read just about most of the classic sci-fi novels. I went for a long period where I wanted to read all of the classic sci-fi novels that I could and did a pretty good job I think. I did the same thing with some of the classics that appealed to me, like Frankenstein, Dracula, Moby Dick, Dr. Jekyle and Mr. Hyde, etc...

Not that any of you would really know that though. It's kind of like telling a Sci-Fi geek that they should really see the first 3 Star Wars movies. Do you think that they really haven't seen them? LOL

Not saying that I've read everything, but the most common stuff...I am pretty sure I have read them.
