There certainly is a line between "begging" and self-promotion, but what about you put together low budget samples and broadcast yourself? I mean : youtube allows easy publication of video media, video recorders are cheap and powerful nowadays : you could "host your own shows" online for.. the cost of a camera and some time - and use that as a self-promotion tool in many ways : naturally through your website, and as portfolio material when contacting producers. 2 cents in the bucket..
