On the 3d heart bit : everybody MUST dig into "implicit surfaces" - approx. anything can be rendered in 3d using them, eg. using surfaces described as functions, rather than an aggregate of vertices. No surprise for me here, but a good hint I had to "pick up" and enhance. Google + Implicit Surfaces + Marching cubes == lots of fun, not only metaballs (meta-anything actually, think meta-hearts..).
