His approach is in fact the classical horizontal spans one. He uses an image containing colored gradients from intensity 0 to 1 then back to 0 ( see the image below ), positions and stretch it as to show the gradient of intensity on each horizontal slice of the triangle. Simple and fast enough for a few polygons.
