Server side code for a client resolution check, are you serious ? I would go for some simple [url=http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-mediaqueries/#width]CSS3 Media Queries[/url] providing the best image possible for the current width and height of the document, with a JavaScript fallback, and a default CSS as last resort fallback. But honestly I doubt, I'd bother. Just use background images and plain text positionned in CSS, so that it remains accessible and more or less semantic.
