Is it possible to legally obtain a new serial # for a Win XP CD?

I'm looking to use Boot Camp to run both OS X (.5.1) and Windows and although I have a legal copy of Windows XP, for the life of me I can't find what I did with the sticker that has its serial #s. Is this a possibility or am I really stuck with searching the internet for a serial?

this may sound a little weird, but i once called microsoft and asked them to give me a serial for my illegal windows vista beta. (i know it was just a beta, but it was closed beta and downloading it via torrent was illegal. i was so curious about it so i just couldnt resist...) a lady answered the phone and asked me from where i got my copy of vista. i told her that i downloaded it somewhere from the internet. she was very friendly and gave me a serial afterwards. i know this was certainly an exception due to the beta version, but try calling microsoft. the call is completely anonymous (if you dont trust them you can still call from a phone booth), they wont ask you where you live or want to know your name. maybe you can work something out with them. if they say "sorry, cant help you" you can still look for a serial in the internet.

A friend, on at least two occasions I'm aware of called microsoft to get his xp product key. Worth a try I'd say.

And I'd really like to know how you make out with this dual boot on the Mac. I've read a bit about it but have not found anything dealing specifically with software such as photoshop...or open office. I've been considering a new system for quite some time now but the software issue, plus the cost has kept me away from Mac. That said I'm just about prepared to go for the iMac if for no other reason than I am at my wits end with towers and cables and wrenching these things. Just don't want to do it any more.

Good luck with the phone call. =)

^What they said^ You'll probably have to pay for your key at worst...

I can confirm that Windows XP runs nicely on a Mac Powerbook Pro. Can't vouch for any other Macs. Hope you enjoy Microsoftening your Mac. lol

Jestah,

Do you have this copy of XP installed on anything currently? I know hot to get the keys for it as long as it's installed.

No, I don't have XP installed anywhere but know of programs such as Magical Jelly Bean. My thought of running Windows on a Mac hit a bump when I realized my Win XP CD is an upgrade. I decided I'll just go out and purchase Vista this week when I have time.

bummer. I had that same issue not long ago when needing to reinstall XP myself. I had to go buy the full XP Pro disc.
