It seems, after generations of striving against enforced ignorance, we're all taking a step backwards from social and scientific enlightenment. It's the same the world over; we're being forced back into the dark ages by a fear of offending the religious zealot.
It's not just frightening - it's saddening.
The mention of Big Bang theory in relation to ID or evolution just shows Gonzalez up as a fool. Is there a stronger phrase than 'utter, raving f**k-wit'? How do these dangerously stupid individuals get to have a say in anything other than whether they want Frosties or Sugar Puffs for breakfast?

Actually, WS, I'm surprised to hear you say that. What are you basing this on? I was under the impression that there are fairly large portions (large in relation to other organizations such as government, not in relation to the entire population of the church) that are devoted to scientific research.
Historically the Catholic Church has been extremely resistant to scientific discovery.
There have been many great leaps made in that regard, and the church has devoted a significant amount of resources to scientific research in the last several decades.
Catholics, as a group, however, do not seem to have kept up with that initiative, and the current pope has made a great number of statements that I would call contradictory to the outlook of the previous two popes. Especially in regard to evolutionary science.

While it is true that the Catholic Church has made some improvements in how they view the Scientific Fact and the Scientific Method, they are still very resistant to it in many areas.
As is the constituency.

Sorry, but I find it laughable that anybody can claim that the Catholic Church has lowered its resistance to scientific progress. If there has been any change in its stance, it will be for no other purpose than to better address the curiosity of its followers in a manner that befits its prime directive; keep the people ignorant!
This prime directive has a purpose - instill fear of the Church and its representatives, and aid oppression of the masses. The CC has nothing to do with worshipping God, but with the unquestioning worship of His self-proclaimed representatives - proliferant child-rapists included.
The Catholic Church has prospered as a direct result of this directive, and continues to do so today. Anybody who claims otherwise is ignorant of CC history and current events.
You might as well claim that the Pope/CC was anti-Nazi.

You all know I am not one to defend the catholic church by any means...but their efforts in various realms of science are fairly comprehensive for a strictly religious organization.
