I was checking Google Analytics like I do once a month or so and I noticed the volume went through the roof yesterday. At first I thought I got hacked and my site was now a zombie, part of huge DOS conspiracy.

I checked further and found it was from site called stumbleupon - which i'm vaguely familiar with.

They referred in one day what I normally do in 1 month.

There's no way in hell i'm going to install their toolbar (or anybody else's for that matter) so I have no idea how they got hold of my site, or where the site is listed.

Anyone familiar with how this outfit works? I'm glad people are coming to visit but I don't understand how this happened. Gee if only I had ads on my page or something to sell, I could buy a new camera.

Update:
For fun I googled Nature and Travel Photography (without any quotes) and I ended up in the first 100 results. Google alerted me, as usual, that I did not need the AND operator (although I wasn't using it in that sense).

I then ran Nature Travel Photography and was no longer in the top 100 results.

So what gives? Since I didn't use quotation marks around the string, shouldn't the results be the same?

Stumbleupon is awesome, you should try it. Plus, on an option it can interfere with google results. (not very good or bad it's a "meh")

What probably happened was that someone said they liked your page, then a few other someones with a recorded similar "taste" to that first someone, were in time shown the site. If one of those liked it, the thing repeats and spreads.

edit: nice photos where do you go to take them?

Yes, SU is great for several things. One is, of course, mindlessly browsing semi-directed content.
Another is in spreading a site that has content you want to spread.

Every time someone clicks the thumbs up when viewing your site, its circulation among members increases.
