Gary Gygax, the co-creator of D&D has passed away.

Dungeons & Dragons co-creator dies at 69

D&D basically rescued my life, and kept me from sliding into drugs and the gang scene in my high school years.

This is a sad day for me.

One of my icons has died.

Can't say I know much about Gary the person, but I'm definitely familiar with his work.

Anybody wanna guard a caravan from raiders? Or scout the local goblin caves? Chase down the Theives' Guild? Battle corruption in the clergy?

Makes me want to tell the quick little story of my first real D&D session. If I get back into it, this story will be the first on my list.

I still have the dice that came with D&D 1rst Ed boxed set. I'll roll them in his honour.

RIP

That's interesting to read, all my teachers having tried to convince me that playing D&D would do just the opposite to me. (I didn't buy any of it, of course. Especially the part about demons replacing my soul when I became really steeped in my character.)

Meh... you run the risk of letting personality traits of your characters influence your own personality if you're an author, or if you write screenplays, or if you're an actor... creating a playing a character in a roleplaying game is no different. I don't let any of my characters overtake me. And they can be useful little playgrounds in which to safely examine personality traits that you yourself exhibit and the effects that they can have on people.

Excellent stuff Wes, made me laugh. I've bookmarked that page straight away.

The World of Warcraft 2.4 patch yesterday was dedicated to Gary Gygax. I felt it was a nice gesture.
