When one door closes another one opens.

My web host is garbage. So I'm leaving them, as one leaves a bad marriage.

I now have the opportunity to redo my site from scratch.

I've already decided for maintenance reasons principally that 90% of the site is going to be trashed.

I'm keeping my blog, I will probably keep at least one SSP showcase given the average user seems to love it, but I need one good gallery now.

Any suggestions for displaying photos. Any really great photography sites there that you would recommend - not for ripping off, for inspiration of course - talking the site now, not the content.

edit: oh, I forgot to give my web host a plug "Webserve.ca - for a hosting experience to die for - and your server and site will die repeatedly - trust us on that"

Simple static pages with lots of thumbs.

Yeah I'm inclined to agree, consider any tool out there for browsing photography any web application, iPhoto, Picassa, the fantastic PicLens, Photoshop browse. They are all centred around displaying thumbnails with a high contrast background.

I say Keep it simple.

I've been playing around with Plogger a bit lately, and I love it.
All of the other gallery packages I've tried out were way over the top for my tastes. This one is nice and simple.

reisio - what do you mean by static? Just curious...

Thanks gents.

DL: I'll take a look at Plogger..have you looked at PixelPost?

For the static content, reisio means pages that exist without having the server create them via SQL or similar, it only needs to serve the files.

I do agree with that to a large extent. For one thing it makes backups and migration to a new host a no-brainer. However, I don't see myself keeping a blog without a CMS (for search, categories, web updates rather than FTP, etc.). So that part will remain dynamic.

I know that's what I would mean by it, but not 100% that reisio meant that...and I very strongly disagree if in fact he did.
I can't imagine a good image gallery that is not run by a database of some sort.

I mean I don't want to be waiting on JS or spiffy effects. Just give me the thumbs, and my middle button will do the rest; thumbs that link to a (lightly) styled page with just a larger version of the image are okay, too.

I'm not a huge fan of typical databases, either, but that's irrelevant if you know what you're doing.

In that case, I agree...

I guess it's a compromise between performance (for user) and maintenance.

When I redo my site, with a new host, I think I'm going to use Wordpress as both the blog and the photoblog.
I'm experimenting right now but this what I did.
I created a new category called Photo Blog and gave it its own css file and category file.
I then modified the php so that:
1) the photoblog posts do not display on the blog (only if called from the sidebar)
2) the photoblog restyles itself (shrinks the sidebar) to allow for larger photos
3) removed the title to allow for more room

here's a test. Photos are at 800 wide presently, might shrink them a little.
