Does anyone know a reliable (free?) folder protection software? i would prefer password protection but i'm open for anything else as well. i've tried google and came across these:
http://folder-protection.softonic.de/
http://www.folder-protection.com/

can anyone share some experiences?

If it's all the same to you, you can use ZIP archives, they encrypt contained files with a password. Though I must say, 7-Zip (it's free and open source) is much better for this. Using archives allows them to be portable, that may or may not be what you want.

I know Windows XP has some sort of folder protection, but I'm not too sure on how it works. I never used it.

You'll need to specify more information on what you want to accomplish.

Zavaoby suggestion will keep script kiddies out - but an archive is not an encryption container.

Have you looked into windows own encryption support?

Personally, I use TrueCryp to generate encrypted drive letters.

I second TP's suggestion on TrueCrypt. It's really a good piece of software.

XP Pro does come with a folder encryption that works pretty well, but TrueCrypt will "hide" the drive once TrueCrypt is shut down. Check it out. It's really nice.

It will encrypt and hide a folder that you specify. It will show the folder and contents as a drive when you run TrueCrypt. Once you exit TrueCrypt, the drive goes away.

It will make more sense when you install and run it

I use Blowfish to encrypt files & folders on external disks:

I don't think you'll get it to hide your files completely, but you can have it assign random file names to them while encrypting and restore the names when decrypting.

It's pretty fast, portable and not too hard to wrap your head around once you've had one good look at the available options
