Any time Microsoft wants (as they have in the past, often), they can change their protocols, formats, systems, etc. just to break 3rd party software. As long as they're willing to do this, no 3rd party reimplementation software will ever be able to keep up, or, most likely, last. Same applies to Adobe (Flash), Sun (Java), and on and on. Doing it on purpose isn't even a requirement ? they can just decide to do something different for sensible reasons or not, and since it's their technology, and their implementations are almost certainly the most prevalent, people will expect similar functionality.
