I've been looking but can't find anything, yet. Is there a way that I can have the alt attribute and not have IE display it as a stupid tooltip?

Thanks in advance!

Adding a title="" might help. I don't have IE available to check though.

HZR: I doubt it. IE got alt and title mixed for years. OTOH I wonder if recent-ish versions of IE get them right for pages ins strict mode.

No they didn't. I have a page in Strict mode. putting alt="" does the trick for IE and keep it validated. I guess that will have to do.

Why are you trying to hide the alt text from popping up? If you don't want it, just don't include it. If you are trying to be W3C compliant you are kind of defeating the purpose of it by hiding it. If you are trying to get a search engine to work for you, you will probably need more help than alt text keywords.
