Topic: Disk imaging software? (Page 1 of 1)

Was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for some disk imaging software?

A friend of mine has 2 computers that she wants so make a complete restore for in case of a serious crash. What I was thinking was software that you could schedule and have it create say an ISO file on an external drive. So if there is a crash, I could burn the ISO, run it and all would come back as before, software, data and all.

I was looking at possibly Acronis and I also found this software but don't know anything about it.

I have been using Acronis Enterprise for quite some time at work to backup all my company's data. Works well, except for the clone feature...can't quite figure out why it doesn't work though. I use the schedule option to do incremental backups everyday and it seems to work well.

Well, I'd take Partimage any day over dd. At least it only saves the allocated clusters .

Seriously, there's a lot more to 'disk image' backup these days than simply saving each bit on the partition.
Depending on your objectives, there's incremental disk imaging, schedulding, compression, windows-id-changing (for setup of multiple machines),...


Just remember: A backup scheme which's restoration has never been tried is worse than no backup. It gives false security.

do you think that simply doing a backup of data is better? And then just load the OS and all software back, then putting the data back? I've always done it that way. Just in case there's a problem with the image and not to do an image of a bad hard drive. Don't want to restore the problem.

I think a big storage drive with the computer set to copy valuable data to it on a schedule would be fine. However, my friend wants a "complete restore disk".

I should also mention that this will be used to back up Windows XP Pro...

I haven't read it all yet, but Partimage looks like Linux based and not Windows? Probably wrong on that...
