Death at show fuels US gun debate

quote:
Mr Bizilj told the Globe he had allowed his son to shoot the Uzi - which can fire hundreds of rounds a minute - because it was considered to have little recoil.

He said Christopher had fired handguns and rifles before, but never an automatic weapon.

"This is a horrible event, a horrible travesty, and I really don't know why it happened," said Mr Bizilj, a hospital director from Ashford, Connecticut.

Maybe perhaps it is because you are a total f&%king idiot?

Sorry folks, but stuff like this gets my goat.

Now, I did not have a father growing up (especially not one who pressed an Uzi in my eight year old hands and said "shoot'em up!"), but I did have men who, more or less, took over the role. And all of them were very controlling of the firearms that we had, and even though I did learn to shoot at an early age (as did both my sisters), we were taught to have a healthy respect for guns, and to treat them with care.

We certainly were not allowed to shoot automatic weapons.

We also did not shoot anyone, including ourselves.

I cannot fathom what in the HELL was going through that father's mind (in comparison to the lead that went through his son's) in letting his eight-year old shoot an Uzi!

I am having a hard time picturing that a trained, experienced Trainer allowed it.

All I can say is, award the guy a Darwin Award. I hope he does not have other children.

I'm not sure how to write this.

People who have guns and use them(not for selve devence) are ... stupid
Pople who give children guns are even more stupid
People who are proud of there guns are ..you guessed stupid

Here in austria we have very strickt laws about guns. You are not allowed to own guns without a permit. Owning semi/automatic guns here is illegal even with a permit. There are even verry strickt laws on how you keep the wepon (wepon musst be locked away, ammunition has to be kept in a seperate location). As far as i know only hunters are allowed to have rifles. And as far as i know uzis and pumpguns are stricktly forbidden here. An WOW we do not have maniacs running around shooting everything they see.

In my oppinion rules can not be to strickt.

That's my problem with it, too. If there were any problems with letting an 8 year old shoot an automatic gun, shouldn't the trainer have stopped him?

I understand the father's perspective, though. He was teaching his son how to use a machine gun. He thought his son could handle it because he had already taught his son how to shoot hand guns and rifles when he was 5. There shouldn't have been an accident...but unfortunately there was.

Why does an 8 year old need to know how to shoot a machine gun?

I really am having a hard time getting grips on that as well.

I can understand learning about guns, how to handle them responsibly and respectfully. Clean them, service them, and how to shoot them. Especially if hunting is an activity that is practiced in the family (and especially if hunting is used to help support the family, as well, as it was in mine). Also, I do think it is important for those who live in areas where there are dangerous wild animals, that they know how to use and handle a firearm for protection (as it was also in my case).

But to my best ability, I cannot fathom where machine guns fit into that picture. I was under the impression that it is illegal as hell to hunt with a fully automatic weapon in the US (which an Uzi is).

Perhaps things have changed since I was into hunting, but I simply cannot recall even ONE incident where a hunter had a fully automatic weapon, and was using it to hunt deer or elk with it.

An automatic weapon is really not meant to be used for any type of hunting, to be honest. Without proper training in how to control burst usage (spraying more than 3 bullets is just a waste of ammo, to be honest, for the accuracy after the third round drops drastically), an automatic weapon is more dangerous to those around an individual using such a weapon in such a manner, than it is to the target.

In any regards, I really see no reason to have an eight-year old learn how to fire a fully automatic weapon. At least, not an important enough one that would warrant the inherit dangers of learning to use and handle such a weapon.
