Hi, gang. Long time. Been very busy on my latest book, trying to get it done before the end of the year. And other stuff.

Anyhow, I have a problem concerning getting some research done. I have access to a newspaper database through a local library. I can get access through other libraries, as well, but none other rivals the archival selection of the particular library I choose to use.

Unfortunately, in addition to my password, the site appears to grant access based on location, which I'm guessing is based on my IP address. Too far away from that particular library's city and I'm denied access. This is a problem when I'm staying at a friend's house and trying to get work done, or on the road and need to look something up.

Is there any way I can fool their server into thinking I'm connecting from the same IP address I use at home? If it helps, my friend is using a Linksys router, same as mine at home, which I could configure. Ideally, though, I'd like to be able to do this entirely on my laptop so it'll work on the road, too.

connect to your pc at home(or any other maschine that can access the library) via vpn. then use this connection to surf to the site you want.
You will have to look up how exactly this has to be set up (or an inmate willbe able to tell you)

That should solve the problem nicely.

If using WinXP, you can use the Remote Login built into the OS - just make sure that you protect it accordingly.

There are various other programs out there that will allow this, btw - I used to use a free application for my Server for others to connect with, a VPN program. It allows remote access, for example.

There are also some pretty advanced php proxy apps if your web server is in an area with access, alternatively run apache at home, but the vpn idea does make the most sense, especially if you have the bandwidth for it.

I would use something like logmein running on your home machine and then just connect to it via a web browser. It works really well actually.

Don't use the remote desktop with XP over an internet connection. That info is sent plain text

LogMeIn.com has a free account that works great. Hope that helps.

glad you like LogMeIn. It really has saved my butt a few times. I have it running on my work computer (sshhh...don't tell) and I've had to get into my computer and email myself stuff.

They also just updated their linux portion so I can get into it via my main computer at home. Now, if I could just get into my linux computer via LogMeIn that would be great

OK, officially the coolest friggin thing I've ever seen on my computer.

I've been a long-time user of LogMeIn - I have not found a similar free service that's anywhere near as good, and it's a lot less hassle than setting up an encrypted remote desktop session. I use it from my work PC, home PC, and the laptops and PCs of several friends and family who need tech support once in a while.

White Hawk : I have not been real successful in getting others connected through my account so I can see them. I am certainly not going to give them my user and pass to add their computer to my account.

How do you get other computers connected with LogMeIn that you don't have direct access to?

Can't find it in the manual anywhere. Maybe I just haven't looked very hard
