[Edit: Yup. Just tried it and was told that I am not allowed to delete threads. Which is fine with me, actually, but I just thought I'd mention it so a mad sci can come along and put this thread out of its misery.]

uh, my bad. Guess it's up to me to delete these bayies then.

I have started to delete the obvious spam threads.

I have been saving one with the user name and moving it down here so that the name could be banned.

these guys sing up each time, so banning the username is almost useless, I'm afraid

Do we have custom registration form yet? All you need is a custom question such as "Are you a bot?" and they won't know what to make of it... I've tried it and it works.

I've noticed there's a fresh deluge of SPAM and porn being posted over at the Guru's Network too.
Anyone here know anyone there who can perhaps do something about it? Seems a shame that such a fantastic site is now the resting place of crap.

All I can say is that the forum I tried this on never got a single spam post since I implemented the custom question. And it makes a lot of sense if you think about how the bots probably work. Nothing can protect us from human spammers tho. And this is a higher profile forum here so we may get visited by a few.

I know it's a bit sad, and probably not entirely effective, but as I was bored this morning, I did a search for 'free newsletters', 'depraved animal porn', and a few others. Having found a good list of 'sign up for free email' pages, I proceeded to enter all three of the email addresses in that spam post to every one.

I was bored, and it cheered me up. It was almost worth the mental trauma of the latter search results.

I am having a hard time discerning the difference between "depraved animal porn" and "animal porn"...

Yes, animal porn is depraved - without the shadow of a doubt - but I thought adding 'depraved' to the search would produce extraordinarily depraved results. Either way, I think I managed to sign those email addresses up to a few hundred newsletters and disgusting sites which, with luck, wil share his email address with affiliates, thereby ensuring a healthily unpleasant influx of crap to each of his inboxes. I even sent invites to the other addresses from within accounts set up in his name (for the purposes of creating the accounts, this name was "Spamming F***wit").

I'm not sure of the ethics of what I've done, but it felt satisfying.
