hello,

i own a domainname which i want to transfer from one registrar to another, simply for money issues.

the domain is currently close to expiration and currently registered at nic.at and i want it transfered to gandi

i have already read through the FAQs on those sites, but i dont really understand everything. will i need to explicitly cancel my domain at nic.at? or should i just let it expire totally and then register at gandi? can i transfer it somehow even if it is not expired yet? if so, how?

thanks!

Just get in touch with the the new hosting service and tell them you would like them to host the name. They will update the DNS with the new IP for your domain. You will need to maintain the registration and will probably continue to have to pay for the name through nic.at since they are the domain restistrars.

The only other way would be to let the domain name expire. You will have to wait for a while after domain to become an abandoned domain and re-register it through the new host. You will probably have to wait up to 90 days after the expiration date and you'll also have to take the chance that someone else will register the domain before you do. I think it would be better to just transfer the domain to the new host and leave the registration with nic.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but since it was brought up.....

Let's say I have a domain I'd like, but it's currently registered by someone else. Normally not a problem, I'd just move on to another one. However, looking it up, the one I was looking for is about to expire (very soon). Assuming the current owner doesn't renew it before it expires, would I be able to register it? Or does it have to be marked as 'abandoned?'

Some registrars, like GoDaddy, have a backordering. With this you can snatch the domain as soon as it's available. If it's backordered by multiple people, it's up to which registrar checks availability first after it becomes available. Otherwise you can keep a close eye on it and try to snatch it before someone else does. Backordering is the way to go if the domain has some demand.

hi grumble,

don't let it expire before signing up with gandi as people could then snatch it away as zavaboy said.

to get the domain transfered before it expires, it seems you can just register with the new registrar. nic.at should then email you and ask you to confirm the transfer.
instead of waiting for nic.at's email you can also send a fax after you completed the order at gandi, see below ...

It's possible to transfer a domain by using Tucktail.
It's useful for me.
